This program equips leaders with the knowledge and practical skills to effectively support the growth and development of others through coaching and mentoring. Participants will learn how to distinguish between coaching and mentoring, apply essential coaching techniques, and adopt mentoring practices that foster learning, accountability, and performance improvement.

Outline:

I. Understanding Coaching and Mentoring

Coaching and mentoring are two distinct yet complementary forms of developmental conversations. This segment clarifies the differences between coaching and mentoring, helping leaders understand when each approach is most appropriate and how both contribute to individual growth and performance.

II. Practicing Effective Coaching

Effective coaching focuses on helping people think more clearly and take ownership of their actions. This session introduces the basic skills required to facilitate productive coaching conversations, with emphasis on effective listening and powerful questioning. Different types of questions will be explored, particularly the distinction between questions that simply gather information and those that deepen insight and enhance the coachee’s thinking.

III. Practicing Effective Mentoring

Mentoring is often associated with advice-giving, but effective mentoring requires discernment and balance. This session highlights both direct and indirect ways of giving advice and emphasizes the importance of knowing when to ask questions and when to offer guidance. Key roles and behaviors that mentors should demonstrate to support meaningful development will also be discussed.
