    NAVIGATING SUCCESSFULLY IN A RAPIDLY CHANGING ENVIRONMENT

     

    THE RAPIDLY CHANGING ENVIRONMENT

    PICTURE YOURSELF- SAME TIME LAST YEAR.

    WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT PRESIDENT TRUMP WILL WIN THE US PRESIDENCY? 

    WHO WOULD HAVE IMAGINED THAT THE UNITED KINGDOM WILL LEAVE THE EUROPEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY IN WHAT WE NOW CALL AS BREXIT? 

    AND LASTLY, WHO WOULD EVEN IMAGINE THAT PRESIDENT RODRIGO DUTERTE WILL BECOME OUR NEW LEADER OF THE PHILIPPINES AT A CRITICAL JUNCTURE IN OUR NATION’S DEVELOPMENT?

     

    THE BUSINESS WORLD IS NOT SPARED.

    IT USED TO BE TAXIS, BUSES, JEEPNEYS, TRICYCLES AND PRIVATE CARS.  NOW, THE WORLD’S LARGEST TRANSPORTATION COMPANY IS UBER AND IT DOES NOT EVEN OWN ITS ASSETS.  WHEN WE USED TO TRAVEL, WE RELIED ON HOTELS, LODGES AND MOTELS FOR OUR ACCOMMODATIONS.  NOW, WE HAVE AIR BNB AS THE WORLD’S LODGING COMPANY AND THEY DO NOT EVEN OWN THEIR ROOMS.  WE HAVE ALSO SEEN THE VAST GRAVEYARD OF COMPANIES THAT HAVE BEEN VICTIMS.  NOT ONLY IS OUR ENVIRONMENT RAPIDLY CHANGING, IT IS BEING TURNED UPSIDE DOWN.  FOR STAR WARS ENTHUSIASTS, THE CHANGES ARE PROCEEDING AT WARP SPEED. 

    THAT IS WHY IT IS CRITICAL TO LOOK AT OUR OWN ORGANIZATIONS IN RELATION TO THE ENVIRONMENT.  WHEN THE RATE OF CHANGE IN YOUR COMPANY IS FASTER THAN THE RATE OF CHANGE IN YOUR ENVIRONMENT, YOU ARE AHEAD OF THE CURVE- YOU ANTICIPATE TRENDS, YOU RESPOND QUICKLY AND WILL BE ABLE TO “TAME” AND “MASTER” THE CHANGES THAT WILL COME YOUR WAY.  WHEN THE RATE OF CHANGE IN YOUR COMPANY IS SLOWER THAN THE RATE OF CHANGE IN YOUR ENVIRONMENT, THAT IS WHEN IT BECOMES DISASTROUS.  YOUR ORGANIZATION GETS RELEGATED TO A PASSIVE MODE AS IT STARTS TO BE SWEPT BY THE CHANGES.  

    IF THERE IS ONE WORD THAT WILL CHARACTERIZE THIS CURRENT AGE OF OURS, IT IS DISRUPTION.   TO BE SUCCESSFUL, WE HAVE TO SELF-DISRUPT AND PRACTICE DISRUPTIVE INNOVATION.  ACCORDING TO WIKIPEDIA, A DISRUPTIVE INNOVATION IS AN INNOVATION THAT CREATES A NEW MARKET AND VALUE NETWORK AND EVENTUALLY DISRUPTS AN EXISTING MARKET AND VALUE NETWORK, DISPLACING ESTABLISHED MARKET LEADING FIRMS, PRODUCTS AND ALLIANCES.  AN OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE IS WIKIPEDIA ITSELF.  IT HAD A MAJOR IMPACT ON ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITTANICA.  WE ALL KNOW THAT BRITTANICA IS IN THE DUSTBIN OF MUSEUMS.  WIKIPEDIA HAS 5 MILLION ARTICLES FOR FREE WHILE, IN CONTRAST, A $1,000 SET OF BRITTANICA VOLUMES HAD 120,000 ARTICLES.

     

    WHY AM I TALKING LIKE THIS?

    (OR SOMETHING HAPPENED IN THE COURSE OF MY CAREER JOURNEY)

     

    BEFORE I TALK ABOUT WHAT I THINK IS THE FUTURE OF PEOPLE MANAGEMENT AND HOW TO NAVIGATE IT SUCCESSFULLY, LET ME SHARE WITH YOU MY OWN ACCOUNT OF HOW MY CAREER HAS POINTED ME IN THIS DIRECTION OF “DISRUPTION”.  I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A FUTURIST.   AS A CHILD, I HAVE BEEN FASCINATED BY SCIENCE FICTION AND MARVEL COMICS.   WHEN I BECAME A HR PRACTITIONER, I WILL BUY EVERY BOOK THAT PROMISES TO PROVIDE A CRYSTAL BALL INTO THE FUTURE.  AT A CERTAIN POINT IN MY CAREER, I HAVE STARTED TO RELISH AND EMBRACE CHANGE- LOOKING FOR IT WHEN IT DOES NOT EXIST IN A SEEMING MAD RACE TO THE FUTURE.  TRUTH BE TOLD, I AM EXCITED ABOUT THIS AGE OF DISRUPTIVE HR INNOVATION AND I ENCOURAGE YOU TO DO THE SAME.  IT HAS THRILLED ME NO END TO THE EXTENT THAT I HAVE ADAPTED “DISRUPTIVE HR INNOVATION” AS PMAP’S THEME FOR 2017.

     

     

    THE FUTURE OF HR

    THE FUTURE OF HR WILL BE AN EXCITING AND EXHILARATING ONE.  THERE ARE FIVE MEGATRENDS:

     

    1. HR-IT CONVERGENCE.   HR WILL GET INTO “SMACS” IN A BIG WAY-  SOCIAL MEDIA, MOBILITY, ANALYTICS, COLLABORATION AND SECURITY.  THE FUTURE HR LEADER WILL BE A HR TECHNOLOGIST-  HE IS HR LEADER FIRST AND IT LEADER SECOND.  HOW MANY OF YOU ARE IN FACEBOOK?  LAST YEAR WE INTRODUCED FACEBOOK IN THE MERALCO WORKPLACE- (IT IS A CLOSED FACEBOOK FOR MERALCO EMPLOYEES ONLY) AND WE WERE AMAZED AT HOW IT HAS BONDED OUR EMPLOYEES TOGETHER AS WE GET TO KNOW MORE NOT ONLY ABOUT OUR WORKLIVES BUT ALSO PERSONAL LIVES.

    2. BORDERLESSNESS.  HR WILL BECOME MORE GLOBAL.  AT THE LEAST, WE NEED TO BE ATTUNED TO HR PRACTICES WORLDWIDE.  AT THE SAME TIME, WE NEED TO IMPLEMENT THOSE GLOBAL SOLUTIONS IN THE CONTEXT OF OUR LOCAL MILIEUS.  AN INTERESTING CASE IN POINT IS ASEAN.  NOT ONLY DO WE HAVE TO MAKE OUR FILIPINO TALENT COMPETITIVE IN THE OTHER ASEAN MARKETS BUT WE HAVE TO RAISE THE BAR OF THE COMPETITIVENESS OF OUR LOCAL TALENT RIGHT HERE IN OUR OWN BACKYARD IN THE PHILIPPINES.  

     

    3. PARTNERSHIPS.  HR NEED NOT DO EVERYTHING ALONE.  IT COULD PARTNER WITH THE BEST OF THE BEST AND STICK TO THE CORE THAT THEY ARE EXCELLENT AT.  THE KEY WORD THESE DAYS IN THE FUTURE IS COOPETITION- COMPETITION AND COLLABORATION COMBINED.  IT’S ALL ABOUT MANAGING THAT PARADOX.

     

    4. HUMAN TOUCH INTENSIFICATION.  AS WE BECOME GOVERNED BY TECHNOLOGY DRIVEN PROCESSES AND AUTOMATED PRACTICES, WE HAVE TO INTENSIFY THE “HUMAN TOUCH” AND ENSURE THAT PURPOSE AND CONNECTION (THE TWO HALLMARKS OF HUMANS) IS INTENSIFIED.

     

    5. MANAGEMENT SCIENCE.  BECAUSE OF THE ABOVE CONVERGENCE WITH RESULTING “BIG HR DATA”, HR WILL BE ABLE TO USE RESEARCH, PREDICTIVE ANALYTICS AND HYPOTHESIS TESTING IN WAYS THAT HAVE NOT BEEN DONE BEFORE.  THIS BODES WELL FOR A STRONGER AND MORE INFLUENTIAL HR FUNCTION IN THE FUTURE. 

     

     

    9 TIPS TO NAVIGATE SUCCESSFULLY THIS FUTURE

    1. BE IT SAVVY.   JOIN THE RANKS OF NETIZENS IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY.  THESE DAYS, GOVERNMENTS CAN BE OVERTHROWN AND EXECUTIVES CAN BE UNSEATED THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA.  AT THE SAME TIME, BE WARY OF FAKE NEWS AND ALTERNATIVE FACTS.  YOU SIMPLY HAVE TO VALIDATE.

     

    2. RELISH IN AMBIGUITY.  BLACK SWAN EVENTS WILL MULTIPLY IN THE FUTURE. THEREFORE, WE HAVE TO BE READY TO MANAGE PARADOXES AND DICHOTOMIES AND BE COMFORTABLE WITH IT.  FOR EXAMPLE, IF YOU ARE A NATIONAL LEADER, HOW DO YOU COZY UP TO CHINA WHILE MAINTAINING RELATIONS WITH THE UNITED STATES?

     

    3. BE A LIFE LONG LEARNER.  NEVER STOP LEARNING, UNLEARNING AND RELEARNING. STANFORD UNIVERSITY RECENTLY INTRODUCED A PROGRAM FOR 60 TO 65 YEARS WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF LAUNCHING A SECOND CAREER FOR THEIR NEXT 20 to 30 YEARS.  IT MAKES SENSE WITH LONGEVITY-LIFESPANS ARE PREDICTED TO REACH 120.  THE NEW 60 IS 80.

     

    4. BE AN ASEANPHILE.  AS FILIPINOS, OUR DEFAULT IS TO GO TO THE UNITED STATES AND CHANGE OUR NATIONALITY.   WHY CAN’T WE BE ASEAN CITIZENS IN ADDITION TO BEING FILIPINOS.  THE 10 ASEAN COUNTRIES, INCLUDING OUR BELOVED PHILIPPINES, ARE MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN THE WHAT WE SEE AS THE LAND OF MILK AND HONEY.

     

    5. BE AN ECOSYSTEM LEADER.  ACCORDING TO MCKINSEY, THE LEADERS OF THE FUTURE WILL HAVE TO BE ABLE TO OPERATE EFFECTIVELY IN THE PRIVATE, PUBLIC AND CIVIL SOCIETY SPACES.  YOU HAVE TO BROADEN YOUR HORIZONS AND NOT BE CONSTRAINED BY PAROCHIAL OR SILOED THINKING.

     

    6. BE A PURPOSE SEEKER.  AS HR LEADERS AND AS TECHNOLOGY AND AUTOMATION RACES INTO THE FUTURE, WE ARE THE PROFESSION THAT WILL ALWAYS SEARCH FOR THE PURPOSE IN ALL THAT WE DO AND ENSURE THE COMMUNICATION OF THIS PURPOSE TO ALL INVOLVED IN THE EFFORT.

     

    7. BE A CONNECTOR.  WE NEED TO BE SYNERGY FACILITATORS IN THIS EXCITING FUTURE AND NETWORKERS THAT CONNECT ORGANIZATIONS AND PEOPLE.

     

    8. BE A RESEARCHER.  BE INQUISITIVE.  SPEED IS OF THE ESSENCE IN THIS FUTURE.  AS A RESULT, WE DO NOT HAVE TO WAIT FOR ALL THE INFORMATION TO TAKE ACTION AND/OR MAKING A DECISION.  WE WILL HAVE TO RESORT TO HYPOTHESIS TESTING AND THIS IS WHERE RESEARCH AND MANAGEMENT SCIENCE COMES IN.  IN PARALLEL, LISTENING AND ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS BECOME A CRITICAL SKILL.

     

    9. BE AGILE.   IT’S OK TO FAIL BUT FAIL FAST.  LEARN, RECOVER, MOVE ON AND TRY AGAIN.  REINVENT YOURSELF EVEN IF YOU DON’T HAVE TO.  IF IT AIN’T BROKE, BREAK IT ANYWAY.

     

    TO SUMMARIZE, IT IS AN EXCITING AND CHALLENGING FUTURE FOR PEOPLE MANAGEMENT.   I HAVE OUTLINED THE 9 PRESCRIPTIONS TO NAVIGATE SUCCESSFULLY IN THIS ENVIRONMENT AND I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST IN YOUR RESPECTIVE JOURNEYS.
